Web development is basically the term used to refer to the activities that are connected in the development of a website to be put up on an Intranet or the World Wide Web. It could be split into different areas like web content development, web server configuration, server side coding, client side coding and of course, web design.

But among webmasters and other web professionals, the term web development is commonly used to refer to the aspects of website building which are not directly related to designing such as coding and writing markup. It could range from the design and development of a simple web page that only has plain text to the most sophisticated and complex electronic businesses, web-based applications or social networking services.

With bigger organizations and companies, the teams are made up of lot of people, probably even hundreds. But the smaller companies might just require one contracting or permanent Webmaster. Web development could be considered as something that would require the collaborative effort between several departments instead of just one.

Web developers must have a couple of skills and sufficient knowledge in web and graphic designing, copywriting and proofreading that incorporates concepts in web accessibility and search engine optimization, information architecture and other IT development aspects.

There have been a lot of transformation and change that have been brought about by web development, particularly in the world of e-commerce. Online resellers like Buy.com and Amazon.com as well as auction websites like eBay have changed the overall shopping experience of online consumers.

Over the years, many businesses have approached me in Toronto, only complaining about the previous web design company that they worked with to create their current website. Were their expectations to high? Probably not. Most of the time we don’t get the results we were looking for 1 of 2 reasons:

1) The web design company gives too many promises that they simply cannot deliver.

2) The consumer did not thoroughly understand what the web design team was proposing based on the project proposal or agreement.

When choosing a web design company in Toronto make sure that your goals are perfectly aligned with the company’s objectives. If you’re looking for a flashy, animated website that will just serve as an online brochure for your prospective clients than that’s one thing. If you’re main goal on the other hand is to create a SEO friendly website that will generate lots of traffic - than going the flash root might not be such a good idea. If SEO is the next step in your internet marketing campaign, than going with a web design company in Toronto who only specializes in web design might not be such a good idea. You need a web design firm who knows and understands SEO principles. Otherwise, you’re sure to waste more money down the road, which could have easily been avoidable.

Make sure the web design company has the proper tools, knowledge and experience in order to complete the project properly. Do some due diligence and compare all the different web design firms in the Toronto area (there’s lots of them out there). Don’t waste your precious time and money just so you can take a chance with one company, only realizing later that you have to reinvest in a new website. Choose a Toronto web design company that’s right for you and your business.

Then, with the advent of the internet the ability to have an item shipped to your door was made easier. This has led to the huge increase in Canada website stores and, conversely, Canada e-commerce website design. Today, billions of dollars in purchases flow through Canada website stores and many businesses exist only in an online format. Needless to say, many entrepreneurs are opting to become involved in this potentially lucrative arena. However, it is not as easy as some assume. In fact, the need for high quality Canada e-commerce web development is critical in order to maximize the potential of an e-commerce website.

In the past, Canada website stores were primitive in design. Ten years ago, if you wished to purchase online you simply copied down payment addresses that were posted on the website and sent off a check. When people began to realize the internet was a safe venue to make purchases streamlined payment processes were developed. (This is visible in modern Canada e-commerce website design) One of the first it was Paypal. But this involves sending electronic payments through a third party site. But, consumer confidence began to grow as this happen and innovative methods of Canada e-commerce website design were developed.

Shopping cart software was the best development in the Canada e-commerce website design realm. Essentially, shopping cart software allowed for a click of a mouse to move an order to a secured section of the Canada e-commerce web developments where previously stored shipping and payment information were saved in an encrypted manner. This radically streamlined the purchasing process and has significantly contributed to the growth of online sales.

But please do not think you can slap shopping cart software on to any Canada e-commerce web development in a haphazard manner. If the Canada website stores are not effectively designed then it will be useless as far as commercial pursuits are concerned. For example, if a visitor has to search all over the site for the checkout function then the site will be deemed to possess a poor Canada e-commerce website design and probably will not receive any repeat business. Actually, the person would probably not complete the first purchase. So, it is critical that the first steps taken in Canada website stores ventures entail the use of a properly designed website.

Of course, having a brilliant idea for an online Canada e-commerce web development sales venture does not automatically make one Canada e-commerce website design literate. This should not be a problem, however, because there are a number of exceptionally talented Canada e-commerce web development professionals who can properly integrate any commerce design with an aesthetically pleasing visual design. Also, a solid professional Canada e-commerce web development company will also aid in the not just the operation of the web site as well.

E-commerce is the present and future of all commerce. Most people realize this and that is why they play significant resources in their online Canada e-commerce web development. Being involved in e-commerce web developments, however, is never enough. One has to go about things properly. That means it is important to bring in a reliable professional Canada e-commerce web developments team in order to maximize your online commerce.

If you are serious about your web career, don’t miss out on this upcoming festival in Toronto - FITC 2008. It will take place between April 19th - 22th. For those who don’t know about the festival, “FITC is now entering its 7th amazing year, and is the only festival of its kind; combining cutting edge technical and creative speakers from around the world”.

I attended FITC last year (live very close to Toronto… only an hour drive). It was informative and fun but seemed to drag on at times. Bogus, it’s not just about learning things that you can learn on the web - it’s about seeing how other companies handle their business, and how you might absorb some info on how to improve your own. And of course the ever-important networking. It is pricey if you have to pay for it yourself, but if your company covers the cost then it’s worth it. At the after-parties we met people from as far away as Mexico and New Zealand, it was an interesting experience.
