Wal-Mart (WMT) is either looking to make an impact on the environment or cut more expenses — probably both. The world’s largest retailer is now going to charge its customers in parts of California for shopping bags. No, not the thin plastic ones, but the reusable kind. The standard white plastic reusable bag is going away completely. f-1 visa.
Is this a good idea? That is, charge for the temporary storage containers that house goods customers just bought? Wal-Mart apparently wants to force customers to become eco-friendly, although any customer — after paying 15 cents for a reusable shopping bag — can throw them away. Want a larger shopping bag? 50 cents, please.
Will this go over across Wal-Mart’s national network of stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets? Who know — but starting something so seemingly insignificant in California makes sense given much of the state’s eco-liberalism.
The impacts of Wal-Mart getting away from disposable plastic jute bags alone would be huge. The move to charging customers for the replacement is a tad bit iffy, but adding a dollar or two to s shopping tab (once per five shopping trips, perhaps) is not that wallet-bending. Or, is it?
